Teams from across the Mahoning Valley used canned goods to build structures at the Eastwood Mall to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.
The theme for this year’s competition was “Games: Win the Battle Against Hunger.”
Each team was given a 10×10 area to create a structure coinciding with the theme. A bowling ball and pin, a pool table, Link from The Legend of Zelda, a Rubik’s Cube and cornhole boards were just some of the designs.
Teams participating included:
- Pizza Joe’s / Classi-Co Foods
- Senior Care Insurance
- Second Harvest Food Bank
- OH WOW!
- The Cafaro Company
- YSU Sokolov Honors College
- Country Kids & Critters 4-H
- John F. Kennedy Catholic School
- Gateways to Better Living
- Daniel Haggerty
Gateways to Better Living was selected as the winner. They used more than 1,000 cans to form an Etch-A-Sketch depicting Pac-Man.
Second Harvest Food Bank is the true winner each year. The food used to create the structures will be donated to the pantry when the summer-long display is over.

Raising a child with special needs is an extraordinary act of love, but let’s be honest: it’s also an extraordinary act of endurance. Every decision feels heavier, every step forward can sometimes feel like a marathon. And while the focus (rightly) stays on your child’s growth and happiness, somewhere along the way, you stop checking in with yourself. You forget that you’re a living, breathing human being with limits — not some superhero immune to exhaustion. If you’re feeling like you’re running on fumes lately, it’s not a personal failure. It’s a sign. And it’s time to pay attention to it.
Recognizing the Early Warning Signs of Caregiver Fatigue
You probably don’t need a checklist to tell you you’re tired. But caregiver fatigue isn’t just about yawning through the morning meeting or zoning out mid-conversation. It’s a slow burn: resentment sneaks in where joy used to live. You catch yourself snapping at loved ones for no good reason. Your body starts keeping score too — headaches, stomach issues, aches that linger. And perhaps scariest of all, the emotional numbness starts to take hold, making you feel like you’re floating through your life instead of living it. Identifying these signs early isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom. It’s the first step in taking back your life from the endless grind.
Giving Yourself Permission to Matter
If you’re wired like most special needs parents I know, your gut reaction to “self-care” might be guilt. There’s always another therapy session to schedule, another appointment to research, another call to return. But here’s the truth you need to tattoo onto your brain: you are not optional in this equation. Your well-being isn’t some side hobby; it’s the foundation your child stands on. Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s the oxygen mask you have to put on first if you’re going to keep breathing alongside your child through the highs, lows, and everything in between.
Pursuing Your Own Dreams Alongside Parenthood
It’s easy to lose sight of your own ambitions when every day feels like a race just to keep up, but you still deserve space to dream — and to chase those dreams without apology. Maybe you’ve been thinking about starting your own business, something flexible enough to fit into your life but fulfilling enough to make you feel alive again. Forming an LLC can offer real benefits, like protecting your personal assets, providing tax advantages, cutting down on paperwork, and giving you room to adapt as your business grows. Every state has its own process, so if you’re thinking about getting started, here’s a good guide on how to start an LLC in Ohio to help you map your next big step.
Mapping Out a Personalized Self-Care Plan That Actually Fits Your Life
Let’s skip the platitudes about bubble baths and candle-lit yoga, okay? If you’re a parent raising a child with special needs, you need a self-care plan that acknowledges your messy, beautiful reality. Start by identifying your non-negotiables: sleep, movement, real food, and five minutes a day where nobody needs anything from you. Build in small, achievable rituals. A ten-minute walk around the block counts. A coffee on the porch in silence counts. Some nights, just brushing your teeth before collapsing into bed counts. Give yourself credit for every tiny victory. Sustainability, not perfection, is the name of the game.
Finding Help: You Weren’t Meant to Do This Alone
It’s easy to believe you’re the only one who truly knows what your child needs, and in some ways, that’s true. But that doesn’t mean you have to shoulder every burden yourself. There are real, tangible support networks designed specifically for families like yours. One standout resource is Gateways to Better Living, a community that specializes in providing care, developmental support, and hands-on help tailored for special needs individuals. There’s strength in knowing when to say, “I need help,” and in trusting that good people will meet you there.
Protecting Your Energy by Setting Boundaries
You can love people and still say no. You can love your child and still say, “I can’t handle this right now.” Boundary-setting isn’t just for toxic relationships — it’s a survival skill for caregivers. It might mean saying no to one more extracurricular commitment or limiting the number of therapy providers you juggle at once. It might mean carving out sacred time where your focus shifts inward, even if only for a short while. Boundaries protect your limited resources so you can keep showing up without losing yourself in the process.
Rekindling Joy in Small, Manageable Sparks
Some days, joy feels like a luxury you can’t afford. But it’s not. It’s a necessity. And you don’t have to stage grand adventures to find it again. Listen to a song that used to make you dance in your car. Watch that dumb comedy that always makes you laugh out loud, even if nobody else gets the joke. Try something creative — paint terribly, sing off-key, write messy poems. Let joy sneak in through the cracks of your busy, beautiful life. You deserve it, and it will sustain you more than any self-help book ever could.
Remembering That Healing Is Not Linear
You’ll have days where you nail every self-care ritual and still feel hollow. You’ll have days where you skip everything and somehow feel okay. Healing, recovering your energy, finding peace — it isn’t a straight shot. It’s a messy, looping, up-and-down journey. And that’s normal. Give yourself grace on the hard days. Celebrate the easy ones. And remember that every act of kindness you show yourself teaches your child a little more about resilience, hope, and the lifelong art of self-love.
You were never just the caretaker. You’re the beating heart of your family. You’re the dreamer who imagined a better world for your child — and is helping build it, one hard day at a time. Saving yourself isn’t a betrayal of your child’s needs. It’s honoring the person who shows up for them, day after day, with hands trembling but heart steady. You deserve that same fierce, tireless love that you give so freely. Start giving it to yourself, even if it’s messy. Especially if it’s messy.
