Cutting Barriers: A Unique Partnership Promotes Inclusion Through Barbering
Youngstown, OH —— On July 24, 2025, Gateways to Better Living and Beyond Expectations Barber College are coming together to build a more inclusive future—one haircut at a time.
Kristie Murphy, Community Engagement Director at Gateways, will lead an interactive training session for students at Beyond Expectations Barber College on Tuesday July 22 in preparation for the event. The session will focus on how to create positive, empowering experiences for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) in barbershop settings. Students will learn practical communication strategies, sensory considerations, and how to foster dignity and comfort in their services.
“Haircuts are more than a routine—they’re an opportunity for connection and confidence,” says Murphy. “This training ensures that both the barber and the individual feel prepared, respected, and successful.”
As a culmination of the training, Beyond Expectations hosted “Cutting Barriers: Inclusion Day” on Thursday, July 24, offering free clipper cuts to over 50 men served by Gateways to Better Living.
This initiative reflects a growing commitment across industries to make everyday services more inclusive, respectful, and empowering for people of all abilities.

Beyond Expectations Barber College (BEBC), founded and owned by retired Army veteran Eric D. Garrett Sr, has been open for 14 years and has graduated over 300 students! BEBC provides comprehensive training for aspiring barbers, encompassing both technical skills and community engagement, preparing students to serve diverse populations with excellence and professionalism.
